Paranoid Android finally releases Android 5.1 builds for Nexus devices

Paranoid Android fans with Nexus devices have been suffering for quite some time. Well, don’t you worry, as today is your lucky day! The team has announced via a blog post that the new version of the popular ROM is now available for a select list of Nexus devices.

Without further ado, let’s talk about the newly supported Nexus devices! Today’s release adds Android 5.1 support to the shamu (Nexus 6), hammerhead (Nexus 5), mako (Nexus 4), flounder (Nexus 9), flo (Nexus 7 2013) and grouper (Nexus 7 2012). This leaves only cellular-capable tablets and the Nexus 10 out of the loop, but it’s only because they don’t have the devices in hand. Paranoid Android is also announcing they are easing up on releases from now on, due to obvious reasons. Instead of offering weekly releases, they are switching to a “release when appropriate” schedule. Makes sense, even if it does sadden us. Hopefully they can get more team members on board soon! As for now, Nexus device owners can go ahead and download the necessary files from their official distribution site. Also, try to help them with coding through gerrit if you can, they need it now more than ever.

Samsung estimates yet another profit drop for Q2 of 2015

Samsung may still be selling most Android handsets in the world, but their numbers have been dropping earnings report after earnings report for a worrisome time. It was only recently that people were starting to become tired of Samsung’s sub-par design and build quality. Nothing was improving profits and Sammy was falling into its impending doom. In an effort to turn things around, they took their team back to the drawing board and created what would be the solution to their problems – the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.
Compared to previous Galaxy S smartphones, these new flagship handsets were masterpieces of design and engineering (read our Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge reviews). These handsets are powerful, snappy, full of helpful features and, finally, they offered a design worthy of pride. It was a new era for the Korean manufacturer and Q2 of 2015 was the quarter when they would shine… only they didn’t.

Despite the release of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge super phones, Samsung is estimating yet another lackluster quarter. Their earnings guidance report for Q2 of 2015 shows the company should conclude the time period with approximately 48.0 trillion Korean won in consolidated sales and an operating profit of about 6.9 trillion Korean won. This would translate to a 4% decline over Q2 of 2014.
Shall these estimations be correct, it would mean Samsung’s 7th consecutive quarterly profit drop in a row. Definitely not a good sign, especially considering this is the very first quarter report in which the new Galaxy devices are taken into account. Is Samsung’s bad reputation preceding them? Likely, but that is probably not the only factor that comes into play.
Samsung has been facing supply issues for the Galaxy S6 Edge, a phone with immense demand from consumers. We all love those beautiful Edge displays and the new elegant design – it’s likely catching a lot of people’s eyes. If Samsung can’t meet demand, we definitely have an issue at hand, and it’s reflecting in their numbers.

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Shipping Estimates Improve to 1 Business Day for 16 and 64GB Models

As the Christmas holiday approaches, Apple Store shipping estimates for both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus from all carriers in all colors and in 16 and 64GB capacities have now improved to just 1 business day in the United States, bringing the company close to reaching a supply/demand balance on those devices. 

The larger-capacity 128GB devices remain somewhat more constrained than the lower-capacity models, and ship in 3 to 5 business days. 

Shipping estimates are similarly improved in many other countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Thailand, Philippines, and more. 

Throughout the month of December, shipping estimates have been slowly improving as Apple has catches up with demand, and in early December, estimates had improved to 3 to 5 days for 16/64GB models and 7 to 10 days for 128GB models. Last week, estimates for the 16and 64GB models improved further, reaching 1 to 3 day estimates before jumping up again this week to just 1 day. 


The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been severely constrained since their September debut, but Apple has worked hard to improve available supply, going so far as to reportedly delay mass production on the rumored iPad Pro to focus on producing more iPhone 6 Plus units. 

In store supply of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus has also seen major improvement over the course of the last few weeks, and in many stores around the country, it's now possible to walk in and purchase an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. According to tracking tool iStockNow, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units from all carriers and in all colors and capacities are widely available at most stores. 

Back in October, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that demand for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus was "far outstripping" supply, but based on the continually improving shipping times, Apple appears to be on track to meet its supply goals before the end of the year.
