There are lots of custom iPhone companies (you know - glowing light mods, wooden backs, crazy colors) out there, but iFixDirect has been our favorite for a while. We chatted with Mike from iFixDirect recently, and he sent us some examples of the custom work they're doing. It's good stuff!

We've checked out some of their work (like their iPhone color kits) in the past, and thought we'd highlight some of their custom mods.

NOTE: While we checked out their iPhone 4S mods, they've got a great selection of stuff ready for iPhone 5 as well!

Company

Based out of Brooklyn, the NYC iFixDirect crew has been modding iPhones for over a year - and longer than that as individuals. Their website is well made, with a cool custom shop where you can choose colors and customize your iPhone to your hearts content.

Customer service is pretty good with these guys - they respond well on email, Twitter, and Facebook. You can also check order status on their website or shoot them a phone call (remember when it mattered if it was an 800 number?).

Plus, I mean, come on - they love modding.

In the Box

We took a look at their wooden iPhone back and the glass iPhone back for the purposes of this review.

In the box was the glass/wood back itself, wrapped in a protective coating. They also include the correct tools for taking the back of the phone off (those 5 point pentalobe screws).

Other than that, it's a lonely cardboard box. A bit light on the package glory - but we're letting that go since the product was good enough to not need finer trappings.

Design

The wood engraving looks brilliant. A nice dark burn in over the light bamboo color (they change wood variants based on what's on hand, and let you know on their website what's in stock at the moment), it's easy to read. The print on the glass back was also cleanly done.

The finish on the glass is spot on - we've played with some glass backs which felt weird on the phone - not so with iFixDirect. The glass backing from iFixDirect matches the iPhone back perfectly; with your custom design classing it up.

Both types of back plates fit perfectly - slid right into place and held tight. We put the iPhone in a variety of cases to check the fit, and had no issues.

Price / Conclusion

There's no place on the website to upload your custom artwork (vector format necessary) - you've got to email them the details after ordering. It'd be nice to have that built into the order form.

Custom engraved wood backs run you $60, with $45 getting you a custom glass back. The price is definitely competitive.

The iFixDirect guys are classy folk - a legit place for custom iPhone mods (and any other repair stuff you may need for your iPhones). If you're the kind of person who likes customizing your stuff (which I'm guessing you are since you're on ModMyi.com), you should definitely check them out. So many of these companies are shady, and you'll notice the professionalism with iFixDirect.

We're giving their custom mods (as reviewed) 4.5 leaves. Great work! A little lacking in presentation, but the product is the best we've seen.

Courtesy of iFixDirect, we're also giving away two iPhone 4S glass backs customized with the ModMyi.com logo and URL. Use the widget below to grab entries to the raffle!
