Change of an era: Jailbreak lag

Ever since the release of the first iPhone in 2008, users have been able to Jailbreak their devices, to allow them to have more control over their phone’s functions and performance. Wikipediadefines jailbreaking as ‘the process of removing the limitations on Apple devices running the iOS operating system through the use of software and hardware exploits’, although we know that there’s a whole lot more involved.

With the first iPhone, came the first iPhone hardware. In fact, the iPhone 2G’s CPU was clocked at 620MHz and was running iOS 1.0. In light of this, jailbreaks were one of the first ways to open up the operating system to the users discretion – after all there was no App Store on iOS 1.0 – which means they had enormous popularity.

This being said, there are certain rumours still floating around today, that most likely stem from these older, less reliable, jailbreaks. One of the most prominent of these rumours, is that jailbreaks ‘slow your device down’. This isn’t just a rumour, however, as it can be viewed on older devices that this does occur. My point is that with the current development of the iOS platform, and the hardware that runs it, this is no longer the case.

The iPhone 5 is a hugely powerful device, and runs incredibly complex software. Just because it’s simple on the outside doesn’t mean it’s like that all the way through. iOS is a fantastic mobile operating system, and due to the closed ‘boxed in’ nature that Apple have directed it in, it’s also incredibly safe. With hardware and software like this, I have experienced little to no change in the speed of my iPhone, after jailbreaking with the Evasi0n untethered jailbreak. Of course, a huge part of this is the skill and hard work that went into developing the jailbreak itself, courtesy of theEvad3rs, but Apple have done their part too. By consistently creating faster, more powerful and all round better hardware, they have made the jailbreaking experience as smooth as ever. Gone are the days where you had to constantly monitor how many jailbreak tweaks you had installed, or your 3GS would be a painfully slow handset.
